What ࠕ means
It marks t in Samaritan words. Alone, it is a letter, not a word.
The Samaritan script developed from Phoenician and Paleo-Hebrew writing; Paleo-Hebrew is an older form of Hebrew script. Related forms appear at Mount Gerizim in the third and second centuries BCE. Distinctive Samaritan features appear by the third century CE. As of 2026, the branch point remains disputed.
Hebrew tav (ת) shares Taaf’s early ancestor but is a separate letter. The Samaritan script runs right to left, and its letters do not join. Optional vowel marks are separate characters placed after consonants.

Questions people ask
1Why does ࠕ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Samaritan block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
