What ꢑ means
It writes the au vowel as a standalone letter. Use ꢑ when the au vowel begins a word or syllable; after a consonant, Saurashtra writing uses the dependent vowel sign ꣃ. Both mark the same vowel, but the sign attaches to a consonant.
The earliest known printed Saurashtra-script example dates to 1880. The modernized script was simplified in the 1880s. It belongs to the Brahmic family of scripts, a group of writing systems used across South Asia. Saurashtra is an Indo-Aryan language of southern India, in the wider Indo-European family and related to Gujarati. Books in the language have also appeared in Tamil, Telugu, and Devanagari scripts.
As of 2026, the choice still balances maintaining the community’s own script with using other scripts for practical access.
Using the Saurashtra script can foreground the language and its community’s script tradition.
