What ꢪ means
ꢪ is Saurashtra’s consonant m, normally read as ma.
A vowel sign changes its vowel; virama ꣄ cancels it. Context supplies word meaning.
How did Saurashtra writing develop?
Modern Saurashtra was simplified in the 1880s. Earlier texts joined consonants; visible virama ꣄ now cancels the vowel. Unicode 17.0.0 calls the script Brahmic-type, a broad South Asian writing structure, and records Saurashtra books in Telugu, Tamil, Devanagari and its own script since the end of the nineteenth century. Tamil is most used; superscript digits and a colon supply sounds it lacks. In 2017, one StoryWeaver writer found the native script out of use in their setting and used Latin-letter children’s books for mother-tongue heritage reading.
