What ꢁ means
It marks visarga, the sign for a breath after a vowel. In Sanskrit practice, it is pronounced with audible breath.
How did Saurashtra writing develop?
T. M. Rama Rai standardized the modern Saurashtra script in the 1880s. Saurashtra belongs to the Brahmic family of scripts, used across South Asia. By the late 19th century, books in the Saurashtra language also appeared in Tamil, Telugu and Devanagari scripts.
A Saurashtra community group favored Devanagari during a movement for one common script. A 2024 update describes teaching and independent use of the Saurashtra script.
