sharada letter nga

Sharada Letter Nga

22/96

To type Sharada nga (𑆕), use a Sharada keyboard or transliterator and a supporting font. This consonant carries an inherent vowel in ordinary Sharada writing, so alone it is usually a letter sample rather than a message. Sharada grew from Brahmi-related forms, supported Sanskrit and Kashmiri writing, and later gave rise to Takri. As of 2026, its use remains specialized.

What 𑆕 means

Use a Sharada keyboard or transliterator and a supporting font.

As of 2026, Lexilogos maps the G key to the consonant transcribed “ng” or “ṅ” on its virtual Sharada keyboard. The keyboard handles input; the app’s font determines whether the letter appears.

Sharada developed gradually from Brahmi-derived writing, through Gupta forms and an intermediate stage called Proto-Sharada. Coins from Kashmir’s Utpala rulers and a fragment from the Avantipur temple are among the script’s earliest records, from the 9th century. The earliest manuscript evidence dates to the 12th century; the earliest Sharada manuscript found in Kashmir dates to the 14th century.

What does Sharada nga mean?

It is Sharada’s nasal consonant “nga.”

In Sharada, an unmarked consonant normally carries a short “a” vowel. A vowel sign changes it; the virama, a mark that cancels the vowel, suppresses it. In Latin transliteration, the unmarked letter reads ṅa, so by itself 𑆕 is usually a syllable component rather than a complete word.

Sharada recorded Sanskrit, Kashmiri, and other languages of northern South Asia in inscriptions, coins, charters, manuscripts, and learned texts. It was Kashmir’s principal inscriptional and literary script from the 8th century to the 20th century. From the 19th century, wider use of Arabic-script Kashmiri and Devanagari helped displace it. As of 2026, Kashmiri Pandits use Sharada in specialized ritual and horoscope writing. Takri descends from Sharada through Devāśeṣa, an intermediate script that emerged in the 14th century; Gurmukhi and Landa are also related scripts.

Why does 𑆕 show as a box?

A missing font glyph or shaping support can leave a box.

Sharada consonant and virama sequences can join into complex shapes, so the font and app must support the script’s layout rules. As of 2026, Satisar Sharada documentation reports overlapping syllables in Microsoft applications and recommends a HarfBuzz-based app such as LibreOffice. HarfBuzz is a text-shaping engine. A fallback box means the letter did not render; it does not change which character was entered.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𑆕 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
