siddham letter cha

Siddham Letter Cha

21/92

𑖔 is the Siddham letter for cha in Sanskrit, a classical South Asian language; pronounce it with a clear puff after “ch.” Siddham is a script used for Sanskrit writing, including Buddhist texts and mantras; 𑖓 is its unaspirated ca partner. A vowel mark changes the built-in short “a,” while a virama mark cancels it.

What 𑖔 means

It writes Sanskrit cha with a clear puff after the “ch” sound.

For an English approximation, start with the “ch” in “church” and release extra breath. In the traditional Sanskrit consonant order, cha follows ca and adds a puff of breath to the same basic sound.

A Siddham consonant normally carries a short inherent “a”; a vowel sign changes it, and virama is the mark that cancels it. Surrounding signs determine the full syllable in a word or mantra.

Why is Siddham used in Buddhist texts?

It carried Sanskrit Buddhist texts across Asia.

Siddham took shape in South Asia around the 5th century CE within the Brahmi family, an older group of South Asian scripts. It was used for Sanskrit Buddhist manuscripts. The script’s name is linked to siddhaṃ, “accomplished,” a word written at the head of documents.

Buddhist texts carried it to China in the 6th and 7th centuries, and Siddham continued in East Asian scholarship and monastic life. It served Sanskrit study, mantra pronunciation, and ritual as well as manuscript writing. As of 2026, its strongest living association is with Japan’s Shingon and Tendai Buddhist traditions. East Asian examples may run vertically, but the letter remains the same.

In ordinary messages, it reads as specialist script text; Buddhist settings can give it a Sanskrit study or ritual context.

A lone 𑖔 is a syllable-forming letter, not a word with a fixed translation.
