What does Siddham vocalic ll mean?

It marks Sanskrit’s long syllabic l vowel.

𑖉 is an independent vowel letter, not a consonant with a vowel sign; its transliteration is l̥̄.

Siddham is a Brahmi-based script used to write Sanskrit. Its use for Sanskrit is dated to 600–1200 CE. The palm-leaf manuscripts at Hōryū-ji, a Japanese Buddhist temple, were brought from China in 609 and are an early East Asian witness.

Siddham also appears in Buddhist manuscripts and East Asian practice: its letters were used for copying sutras (Buddhist scriptures), writing mantras, bīja (“seed syllable”) practice, Buddhist images, and amulets. Chinese Buddhist scholars used the letters to study Sanskrit sounds and gave some of them esoteric religious interpretations. Japanese Shingon and Tendai traditions preserve Siddham for ritual and calligraphy.

Japanese Shingon and Tendai traditions preserve Siddham for ritual and calligraphy as of 2026.

A standalone 𑖉 is one vowel letter, not a complete mantra; any ritual role depends on its setting.

Why does 𑖉 show as a box?

A font without Siddham coverage is the usual cause. A Siddham-capable font is needed; complex-text shaping matters when this letter appears beside vowel signs or consonant conjuncts.

Does Siddham have a dependent vowel sign for vocalic ll?

A dependent vowel sign attaches to a consonant. The 2012 proposal lists none for vocalic ll; 𑖉 appears as an independent vowel letter.
