SignWriting Eyebrows Straight Up

523/672

𝨊 marks raised eyebrows in SignWriting, a visual notation for signed languages. In American Sign Language (ASL), raised brows commonly mark the topic—roughly, “as for X.” On its own, this character is a facial component, not a complete sign.

What 𝨊 means

It marks raised eyebrows, which can carry grammar in signed languages.

In an ASL sentence glossed in English as “Fish, I like trout,” raised brows mark the first topic: roughly, “as for fish, I like trout.” The facial mark keeps a cue that an English gloss can flatten.

SignWriting grew from DanceWriting, Valerie Sutton’s notation for dance and movement. In 1974, researchers at the University of Copenhagen asked Sutton to adapt it for signed languages. The system developed receptive and expressive styles, as well as stacked writing, which places facial marks above hand and movement symbols. The International SignWriting Alphabet (ISWA) later organized its symbols.

How does 𝨊 change a SignWriting sentence?

Its position shows which phrase the eyebrows cover.

Across signed languages, raised eyebrows can mark a topic, while lowered eyebrows can mark a content question—one asking who, what, where, or why. These are grammatical cues, not word-for-word translations; the signed language and sentence context decide the reading.

When the brow expression covers a phrase, SignWriting can show its scope with brackets or a phrase bar instead of repeating the face mark over every sign. The mark works across that phrase, not as a standalone word.

What does it mean when someone sends 𝨊 alone?

Alone, it is a notation fragment, not a complete sign.

Inside a full SignWriting cluster, read it as eyebrow information and use the signed language and marked span to interpret it. Alone in ordinary chat, it does not establish surprise, a question, or another dependable reaction.

Unicode 8 encodes 𝨊 as a grapheme but not the two-dimensional placement of a full sign. SignWriting arranges facial, hand, and movement symbols in a spatial cluster, so this character cannot say where those pieces belong.

Specialized and instructional: it belongs in SignWriting text, sign-language teaching, or notation discussion.

Alone, 𝨊 is a facial component, not a complete sign or dependable reaction.

Questions people ask

2

Does 𝨊 mean surprise?

No. It marks an eyebrow position in SignWriting; alone, it has no dependable chat-reaction meaning.

Why doesn’t 𝨊 display as a full sign?

Because it identifies one grapheme, not the spatial arrangement of the facial, hand, and movement symbols in a complete sign.
