SignWriting Rotation Modifier-10

666/672

𝪩 is a SignWriting rotation mark: it changes a base symbol’s orientation; it does not name a sign by itself. In a combining sequence, it follows the base, and any fill modifier comes before it. Without a SignWriting font and layout support, it may look detached or blank.

What 𝪩 means

It changes a base symbol’s orientation inside a written sign. 𝪩 is a nonspacing combining mark: it changes a base symbol rather than forming a sign alone. The rotation modifiers turn a base in 45-degree steps. For a handshape symbol—a drawing of a hand’s configuration—the turns can also distinguish right- and left-hand forms.

SignWriting grew from DanceWriting, Valerie Sutton’s notation for recording ballet movement. In 1974, sign-language researchers at the University of Copenhagen asked her to adapt it to record signed movement from video; their collaboration shaped it into a writing system for sign languages. Deaf writers’ publications, dictionaries, books, and software later helped refine it for broader use.

Why does 𝪩 look detached or blank?

It needs a base character and a SignWriting font. 𝪩 modifies a base instead of drawing a full sign. Unicode encodes the symbols, but arranging a complete SignWriting sign in two dimensions requires a separate layout convention.

A compatible font can draw the mark with its base; the surrounding software must also support the layout. Without that support, the mark can look detached or blank.

How do I use 𝪩 in a SignWriting sequence?

Put it after the base; put fill before rotation. 𝠀𝪩 is a structural example: the handshape comes first and the mark follows. This pair shows the order only; a complete SignWriting sign also needs its other symbols and two-dimensional placement.

A technical mark for SignWriting; it modifies a base rather than standing as a sign.

Alone, it is only a modifier, not a complete sign.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𝪩 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Sutton SignWriting block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
