Sora Sompeng letter Kah

16/35

𑃟 is a Sora Sompeng consonant letter: say the k sound followed by a short, unstressed, neutral vowel. It carries that vowel itself, while later vowels use separate letters. The Sora script began as a writing system for Sora and also has a religious spirit-letter tradition.

Text symbol

What 𑃟 means

It is k followed by a short, unstressed vowel. The consonant carries that vowel, so 𑃟 is not just k by itself. A vowel that follows is written with another full letter. Sora Sompeng has no mark to cancel the built-in vowel and no joined consonant forms; when consonants meet, readers use the word to work out whether the vowel is spoken.

On 18 June 1936, Mangei Gomango introduced the script as a Sora-specific writing system, within a broader cultural program. Sora had also been written with missionaries’ sound-based notation (a way to record pronunciation), Telugu, Odia, and Latin letters. Sorang Sompeng is another name for the script. Ol Chiki and Warang Kshiti are separate scripts for other languages in the Munda family, a group of related languages in South Asia; they are not ancestors of Sora Sompeng.

Why does the Sora script have a sacred tradition?

That meaning belongs to the script’s religious setting. In the Sora religious tradition, accounts of Mattar Banom connect the alphabet with Akshara Brahma, a sacred force, and Sora spirit beings. In those accounts, the letters are spirit-letters, not only writing marks. Regional names for the script carry the same sense: in Odisha, sonum sompeng is used; in Andhra Pradesh, nyonan-lipi is used. Both are glossed as “spirit letters.”

Sora Sompeng letters also appear in primary and adult education and in publications. A lesson uses 𑃟 as a letter; in Mattar Banom material it belongs to the spirit-letter tradition.

Why does 𑃟 look like a square?

The font may not support Sora Sompeng. Keyman Basic Keyboard Help 1.0 says its Sora keyboard needs a supporting font and warns that missing support can show a square. That box is a display failure; it does not change the character stored in the text.

When a font supports the script, each letter appears separately. It does not join or change shape based on its neighbors.

For Sora Sompeng spelling or a script sample; outside that setting, readers may not know how to interpret it.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𑃟 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
