soyombo cluster-initial letter la

Soyombo Cluster-Initial Letter La

56/83

𑪇 supplies the La at the front of a Soyombo consonant cluster. The cluster transliterated in Latin letters as lva has a special prefixed form; ordinary La plus the subjoiner makes a stacked version. This letter is separate from Mongolia’s national Soyombo head mark.

Text symbol

What 𑪇 means

It marks La at the start of a Soyombo consonant cluster. Soyombo has four special cluster-initial consonant forms. In a conjunct (a consonant group written together in one syllable), 𑪇 supplies the first consonant; the following letter is the base that receives the syllable’s other signs.

In the Latin transliteration lva, the documented sequence 𑪇𑩾 uses the prefixed La form. The sequence 𑩽𑪙𑩾 uses ordinary La and the Soyombo subjoiner for a stacked arrangement. Both spell the same consonant cluster.

How did Soyombo begin?

Zanabazar created Soyombo in 1686. It was designed for Mongolian, Sanskrit, and Tibetan, and appears chiefly in Central Asian Buddhist manuscripts and inscriptions. The script’s name comes from a Sanskrit word meaning “self-manifested.”

Its design draws on Devanagari, an Indian writing system, and Lantsa/Ranjana styles used for Buddhist texts. Zanabazar also developed Zanabazar Square, a related script for the same languages. Soyombo letter names follow their Tibetan values, which is why this character is named La.

Is 𑪇 Mongolia’s Soyombo emblem?

No; Mongolia’s emblem is a separate Soyombo head mark.

The official national sign is 𑪞, a head mark with moon, sun, and triple flame. If someone sends 𑪇 by itself, read it as a Soyombo letter sample or exact-character reference unless nearby text gives another meaning.

A technical, script-specific letter; alone, it reads as a Soyombo text sample.

The national emblem is 𑪞, a separate Soyombo head mark.

Questions people ask

2

Is 𑪇 the Soyombo symbol?

No. Mongolia’s official Soyombo emblem is the separate head mark 𑪞; 𑪇 is a cluster-initial La letter.

Why does 𑪇 show as a box?

It usually means the font lacks Soyombo support. A font that supports the script may still draw the letter in a different style without changing the encoded character.
