What 𑩴 means
𑩴 is the Soyombo letter m; its reading depends on the language. In Mongolian writing it represents the m consonant; in Sanskrit and Tibetan writing it represents the syllable ma, with an a sound built in. A following vowel sign changes the syllable.
A subjoining mark can place the letter in a Sanskrit or Tibetan consonant cluster. The letters stack vertically, and shaping stretches the frame’s center stem to fit the stack.
How was Soyombo created?
It was designed for Buddhist writing in Mongolian, Sanskrit, and Tibetan.
The script is conventionally dated to 1686 and attributed to Zanabazar, a Mongolian Buddhist monk and scholar. Its letter order follows Tibetan, while its design draws on Lantsa and Devanagari, two writing traditions used in Buddhist texts. Zanabazar Square is a related script. As of 2026, Soyombo appears mainly in historical or decorative Buddhist settings: monastery writing, inscriptions, paintings, prayer wheels, and seals. Mongolia’s national emblem uses a separate opening mark from the Soyombo script; 𑩴 is a letter.
On its own, it reads as a Soyombo text sample; the language determines its sound value.
The mark in Mongolia’s emblem is another Soyombo character, not this letter.
