What ₉ means
It labels what stands before it; the notation decides how.
In chemistry it counts atoms: C₉H₂₀ (nonane) has nine carbon atoms. In maths it labels a term or variable by its index, so x₉ is term number 9 (the ninth x when counting starts at 1). After a number it can name a counting base: 12₉ means 12 in base nine, which is 11.
Should I use ₉ or format an ordinary 9?
Use ₉ in plain text; format a 9 in rich documents.
Many chat apps, social posts, file names and other plain-text fields keep no formatting, so ₉ is how to show a lowered nine there. In Word, Google Docs, Excel or a web page, the subscript button or 9 matches the font and layout, and usually looks better.
The cost of ₉: some fonts lack it and show a box or a mismatched digit, a search for C9H20 may miss C₉H₂₀, and some software quietly turns it into a plain 9.

3Worth knowing
- All ten subscript digits ₀–₉ sit together at U2080–U2089, while ¹ ² ³ live elsewhere, inherited from an older Western European character set.
Questions people ask
1Why does ₉ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
