subscript zero

Subscript Zero

₀ is a subscript zero: it sits below the character before it. In formulas, it marks a starting value or indexed item. Zero's history belongs to the digit generally, not this exact low form.

What ₀ means

It assigns zero to the symbol before it. In x₀, it marks a starting variable; a₀ can label the zeroth term.

The Bakhshali, an Indian mathematical text dated to the 3rd or 4th century, uses a dot for an empty place in a number. In 628 AD, Brahmagupta treated zero as a number. These are milestones in zero's history, not this glyph's origin.

Rendering varies by font: some draw ₀ too high or with proportions unlike a typeset subscript.

For complex equations, use real subscript formatting; ₀ may not align reliably.

Why does ₀ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
