What ⁰ means
In x⁰, it marks a zero exponent. Beside prose, it may mark a footnote or endnote; by itself, it is simply raised text.
Raised-number notation developed over time. Nicolas Chuquet used raised numbers in 1484; in a 1636 book on algebra—the use of symbols to express equations—James Hume used a layout close to modern exponent notation. These are milestones for the notation, not the origin date of this exact character.
How do I type ⁰?
Use a character picker or Unicode input method.
Most phone and desktop keyboards have no dedicated key for ⁰. Search your system's character picker for “superscript zero”; if you use it often, save a text replacement or snippet.
For a whole expression, select the text and apply superscript formatting. The character ⁰ raises only that one zero.
Technical, editorial, or decorative; surrounding notation makes its role feel deliberate.
