What ⁵ means
Look at what it follows.
After a variable, as in x⁵, it marks the fifth power. After a sentence, it can point to footnote 5. Inside an abbreviation, a raised character can stand for shortened letters. In medieval manuscripts, scribes sometimes raised shortened word endings to save space; print later used raised marks for notes, while mathematics used them for powers.
How can superscript 5 become 5?
Compatibility normalization can flatten it.
In Unicode compatibility normalization (NFKC), superscript 5 becomes 5. Text processed this way loses the raised position.
Technical and compact; placement gives it a reading, not an emotional tone.
By itself, ⁵ does not reveal whether it marks a power, note, or abbreviation.

1Why does ⁵ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
