What means
It marks a k followed by a puff of breath. That extra breath is called aspiration; linguists write the sound /kʰ/. The puff belongs to the consonant itself, rather than being a second consonant.
The modern Sunuwar script began in 1942, when Jentich developed it for writing the Sunuwar/Kõits language. Its original set had 22 letters; kha belongs to a later expansion.
Some Sunuwar letter shapes show Latin design influence. A separate letter, aal, was borrowed from Limbu; kha belongs to the later expansion for aspirated consonants, not that borrowing.
Why was kha added to Sunuwar?
It replaced an older two-letter spelling. Earlier spelling put plain k next to h. By the turn of the 21st century, Sunuwar writers had added dedicated letters for aspirated consonants; kha gives /kʰ/ one character.
The sound stays the same in Nepal-oriented and Sikkim Herald traditions, but surrounding spelling conventions can differ. Nepal-oriented writing uses consonants as stand-alone letters; in the Sikkim Herald system, a consonant may carry a built-in vowel, a pattern called an abugida. Kha's sound does not change.
Inside a word, it is ordinary Sunuwar spelling; by itself, it is a letter rather than a complete message.
Drift: As of 2026, no formal orthographic standard governs every Sunuwar publication.

1Why does show as a box?
A missing-glyph box usually means the selected font lacks Sunuwar coverage. It is a display problem; the text still contains the same character.
