What ܛ means
It marks an emphatic t, articulated farther back in the mouth. Syriac transliteration writes it ṭ; plain-t taw is ܬ.
Syriac script developed from Aramaic, within a tradition tracing to Phoenician writing. Local forms are recorded at Birecik (6 CE) and Serrin (73 CE); the earliest dated Syriac manuscript (411 CE) uses Estrangela. Cursive served practical records, including a Dura-Europos bill of sale.
ܛ takes different forms in Estrangela, Serto, and East Syriac styles. It also joins neighboring letters, so its shape can change inside a word.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ܛ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Syriac block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
