What ܶ means
ܶ marks the vowel e in Serto/Turoyo Syriac.
In this Syriac writing tradition, the combining mark follows a consonant and supplies its vowel. East Syriac (Madnhaya), used for Assyrian Neo-Aramaic, uses a separate dotted-vowel set, so comparable vowels can take different signs.
Why do Syriac vowel signs differ?
Syriac readers developed distinct Eastern and Western pointing systems.
A Syriac manuscript dated 411 already shows diacritical points: marks that help readers supply vowels and distinguish homographs—words with the same spelling but different meanings or pronunciations. By about 600, basic points were serving that purpose, especially in important texts such as the Bible.
Across the 7th–12th centuries, Eastern dot vowels and Western Greek-shaped vowels developed as distinct systems. Later, signs took on more specific vowel values; ܶ belongs among Syriac vowel marks such as pthaha, zqapha, hbasa, and esasa.
Why does ܶ look odd by itself?
It has no base letter to attach to.
Type it after the Syriac consonant it marks. It has no spacing of its own; Syriac shaping places it over its base. If it appears alone, some renderers add a dotted circle as a placeholder. Nearby marks may stack or be reordered, so the full syllable’s display depends on font support for Syriac shaping.
A technical Syriac spelling mark; it belongs inside a word, after its base consonant.
Alone, it may float or show a dotted-circle placeholder because it has no consonant to attach to.

1Why does ܶ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
