takri letter cha

Takri Letter Cha

17/68

𑚐 is the Takri letter cha, a consonant read as part of Takri text rather than as a complete word by itself. Takri developed from Sharada through Devāśeṣa and served everyday and official writing across the western Himalaya. Regional and historic forms can give the same encoded letter a very different outline.

Text symbol

What 𑚐 means

It is the Takri consonant letter cha.

Takri is an abugida: consonants carry a built-in vowel that a vowel mark can change or a silencing mark can remove. This letter's name is written cha in Latin transliteration; on its own, it is not a complete Takri syllable. Takri wrote Chambeali, Dogri, and several Pahari languages.

Takri descends from Sharada through Devāśeṣa, an intermediate script used for religious and official writing. One historical account places the Sharada–Devāśeṣa transition in the 13th century; Unicode dates Devāśeṣa's emergence to the 14th century and Takri's differentiation from it to the 16th.

Why does Takri cha look different across fonts?

Regional Takri forms can differ while remaining the same letter.

Unicode's representative glyphs are based mainly on Chamba forms. Dogra and other regional Takri varieties can draw this letter differently; these are glyph variants handled at the font level. A different outline in a Takri font or old scan does not by itself mean a different encoded character.

What does someone mean by sending 𑚐?

It is a letter sample or fragment, not a whole message.

Takri was used for commercial and informal writing as well as accounts, correspondence, land grants, decrees, inscriptions, postage stamps, and captions in Pahari painting. It served several princely states as an official script from the 17th century through the middle of the 20th century, then was gradually replaced by Devanagari. Unicode's 2025 description notes revival efforts to preserve access to Dogri, Kishtwari, and Kulvi literature.

Heritage-script register; alone, 𑚐 reads as a letter sample or text fragment.

A font mismatch can change the outline without changing the character.

Can the same Takri letter change shape between fonts?

Yes. Regional Takri forms can have different outlines; the shape alone does not identify a different encoded letter.
