What 𑚖 means

Use a Unicode-aware input method or a Takri keyboard. The exact steps depend on your device and available input tools.

Takri Dda has no word meaning on its own: it represents a consonant within a written word. Takri is an abugida, a writing system where consonants normally carry an unwritten vowel; vowel signs change it, and a virama mark cancels it.

Where did the Takri script come from?

Takri grew out of older scripts over several centuries. The Takri script's origin runs through Sharada and Devāśeṣa, an intermediate script that emerged in the 14th century; Takri became distinct in the 16th century.

Devāśeṣa was used for religious and official writing, while popular Takri served commercial and informal needs. Takri script was used for state work too: from the 17th century until the middle of the 20th century, regional forms served princely Himalayan states. They appear in manuscripts, inscriptions, stamps, letters, decrees, and records.

Sharada is Takri's predecessor, while Gurmukhi and Landa are historically related script traditions. Devanagari gradually replaced Takri. As of 2026, revival efforts focus on keeping works in the Dogri, Kishtwari, and Kulvi languages readable in Takri.

Why does Takri look different in different fonts?

Regional Takri forms can have visibly different shapes.

The Unicode Standard 17.0 represents Takri mainly with Chambeali forms; Dogra Akkhar forms can look quite different. A font draws a regional shape, but the written letter remains 𑚖.

1

Why does 𑚖 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
