takri letter ra

Takri Letter Ra

37/68

𑚤 is ra in the Takri script — a consonant inside words, not a standalone mood or object. Takri grew out of the Sharada tradition and wrote western Himalayan languages like Dogri and Chambeali for centuries. A different-looking form can still be the same letter from another region or font.

What 𑚤 means

𑚤 is ra, a consonant of the western Himalayan Takri script. Alone it is no picture or mood: in Takri's abugida a consonant carries an inherent 'a' unless a vowel sign or virama rewrites the syllable.

No inventor drew it; the shape evolved. IGNCA puts Sharada's handover to its descendant Devāśeṣa in the 13th century; Unicode puts Devāśeṣa in the 14th century and Takri's differentiation by the 16th century. Landa and Gurmukhi are family cousins, but their ra letters are not interchangeable. The printed form is mainly Chambeali; other regions wrote ra differently, as font variants.

Why did people use Takri?

To write local languages, business, and state records.

The popular hand covered commerce and informal writing; Devāśeṣa covered religious and official work. From the 17th century to the middle of the 20th century it served princely states officially, surviving on manuscripts, inscriptions, decrees, letters, and postage stamps.

Devanagari later took over, leaving Takri to archives, scholarship, and heritage revival.

What does it mean when someone sends 𑚤?

Usually a script sample, or one piece of a Takri word.

Alone in a chat it is likely a script test or 'what is this?' — ask for the word around it; in a word it reads as ra, in a cluster as a ligature or subjoined form.

Archival and specialist — it lands in chat only with someone who knows the script.

A lone 𑚤 reads as an unexplained script sample, not an answer.

Drift: As of 2026, revival is digital: Noto Sans Takri ships coverage; an open request for wider support cites a submitted Keyman layout.

Why does 𑚤 show as a box?

A missing font, not a missing letter. Without Takri coverage the glyph falls back to a box — Noto Sans Takri fixes it.

Is Takri still used?

Officially, no. Devanagari replaced it; Takri survives in archives, scholarship, and revival fonts and keyboards.
