What ௭ means
It is the Tamil numeral for seven. In some typefaces, it can resemble a Tamil letter; the surrounding number pattern helps show that it is a digit.
Tamil script developed from Brahmi. The numeral forms are cursive descendants of earlier Cave numerals, figures associated with cave inscriptions; writing on palm leaves reshaped them. The earliest known examples of the modern set date to about 1400 CE and already match the later forms. Traditional Tamil notation is additive: ௰ is the sign for ten, so ௰௭ means 17. The same numeral forms also appear in Grantha, a script used in South India to write Sanskrit.
