What 𘠷 means
It labels one unit in a scholarly index of Tangut characters. Tangut components help scholars index, describe, and analyze the script's characters. “Component-056” is a sequential inventory label; it gives no pronunciation or word meaning. It is not a standalone Tangut word.
The Tangut script emerged around 1036, when it was created for Western Xia by imperial order. That date marks the script's emergence; 056 is the component's inventory number.
How did Tangut writing change over time?
Tangut served a kingdom before it became a subject of study. Created by imperial order for Western Xia, the script appeared in official and religious writing, including books and sutras. After Western Xia fell, Tangut writing continued through the Yuan and Ming periods, became obsolete by the end of the Ming, and was rediscovered in the late 19th century.
Chinese writing was a model for Tangut, but Tangut remained a distinct script. Unicode records component inventories drawn from Chinese, Japanese, Russian, and English Tangut dictionaries because no single ordering was used universally. Component-056 is a standardized research label within that system.
