What 𘠸 means
A structural piece, not a word to translate. Tangut components help scholars analyze and index larger characters. “057” is a catalog label, not a pronunciation or gloss; reference works use different component systems.
Why was Tangut script created?
For Tangut government and Buddhist texts. The script emerged around 1036 under Li Yuanhao, ruler of Western Xia, for state records, business correspondence, and Buddhist translation. It followed Chinese writing principles and developed alongside scripts used by the Khitan, a neighboring people; it remained distinct.
The earliest transmitted example is an official Guazhou document from 1072. Buddhist inscriptions continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; pillars dated 1502 show Tangut writing persisted much later.
