Tangut Component 097

97/768

𘡠 is a structural piece used to index and describe Tangut characters, not a complete word with its own translation. A component’s role depends on the larger character and the reference system using it; its number does not tell you a pronunciation.

Text symbol

What 𘡠 means

It is a structural part, not a complete Tangut word. Numbered components help scholars describe and look up larger Tangut characters. The label identifies a graphic piece; it does not give a translation or a spoken form.

The same graphic part can play different roles across Tangut characters. A radical (an indexing part) helps file characters; a phonetic element hints at sound. Those roles do not give this component one fixed translation or reading.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It gave the Western Xia state a writing system of its own. Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered its creation in 1036 to build an identity distinct from Song China and to produce works such as a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures. The neighboring Khitan peoples had already created scripts of their own. Tangut characters use a way of combining parts also seen in Chinese writing, but Tangut is a distinct script, not a direct derivation from Chinese.

A manuscript leaf from Khara-Khoto, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, preserves a Tangut translation of a Chinese text. Other surviving books cover Buddhist, Confucian, military, and literary subjects. Dictionaries and Unicode use components to file and describe Tangut characters; component numbering belongs to reference systems, not one universal ancient standard.

Input depends on the method, not a reading

A component number is not a pronunciation. Tangut input tools can select by stroke sequence, by the shapes at the four corners, or from a component list; available routes depend on the program.

Specialist and technical: used in Tangut character indexing, analysis, input, and font work.

Do not treat it as a complete Tangut word; the component label is not a translation.
