Tangut Component-146

146/768

𘢑 is a cataloged building block in Tangut writing, used to index and analyze complete characters; alone, it has no standalone word meaning. The Tangut script served the Tangut-led Western Xia state and a broad literary tradition, including Buddhist texts. Sent alone, this component is more likely a script specimen or font test than a message, and its display depends on Tangut font support.

What 𘢑 means

It is a cataloged part of Tangut writing, not a standalone word. Modern Tangut component lists help index, describe, and analyze whole Tangut characters. A component can play a meaning-related role in one character and a sound-related role in another, so the complete character supplies the reading.

The modern list brings together component systems used by Chinese-, Japanese-, Russian-, and English-language Tangut dictionaries. “Component-146” is a catalog label, not an ancient name or a translation.

How was the Tangut script made?

The Tangut script was commissioned for state rule, Buddhist translation, and cultural identity. Created in 1036 under Li Yuanhao's orders, it supported state-building and a distinct identity from Song-dynasty China; Buddhist scripture translation was among its central purposes. The earliest surviving dated example is an official military document from Guazhou dated 1072. Tangut texts included Buddhist works, Chinese classics, dictionaries, laws, literature, and government records.

Tangut follows Chinese visual principles, but it is a distinct script. The neighboring Khitan scripts offer a historical comparison in state-sponsored writing; that does not establish a connection between this component and a particular Khitan sign. Tangut writing continued after the Western Xia fell: an inscription dated 1502 survives.

What does 𘢑 mean when someone sends it?

Treat it as a Tangut writing specimen, not a complete word. Sent alone, it may identify this component for discussion or test whether a font can display it. The glyph alone does not identify a complete Tangut character or word; the surrounding character or text is needed to read it.

An isolated send suggests technical or historical interest in Tangut writing, typefaces, or Unicode. That reading is an inference from context.

Technical and archival, reflecting its role in Tangut dictionary and character analysis.

146 labels a catalog entry; it does not translate the glyph.

Questions people ask

2

Why is Tangut Component-146 a box?

A missing font. Unicode identifies the character, but the app needs a font containing its Tangut glyph.

Is Tangut Component-146 a Chinese radical?

Sometimes. Some Tangut components help order dictionary entries, but they also describe and analyze full characters; this component's number is not a translation.
