Tangut Component 204

204/768

𘣋 is a Tangut component, a recurring piece used to analyze and index complete Tangut characters; alone, it has no fixed translation or pronunciation. The Tangut script was created by imperial decree to write the Tangut language and was used from about 1036 to 1502.

What 𘣋 means

It helps analyze and index full Tangut characters. Many Tangut characters are assembled from recurring pieces called components; scholars use them to describe character forms and find complete characters in dictionaries. Li Fanwen's Tangut dictionary files full characters under Radical 204, an index label rather than this sign's reading. Tangut writing drew on Chinese writing, but it is a distinct script: a Tangut character cannot be read as a Chinese character. Tangut texts survive in manuscripts, printed books, and Buddhist works.

Technical and archival: this is a writing-system component, not a standalone word.

A box or fallback mark usually means the font lacks Tangut coverage; it does not change the character in the text.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘣋 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
