Tangut Component-205

205/768

𘣌 is a Tangut script component used to describe part of a complete Tangut character; on its own, it has no fixed word meaning. Scholars use Tangut components to index and analyze characters. Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao's court established Tangut writing in 1036, later used for Buddhist works and Chinese translations. A blank box usually means the app's Tangut font lacks coverage.

What 𘣌 means

It is a structural part, not a complete word. This entry belongs to the Tangut component set, which scholars use to index and analyze full Tangut characters. Some dictionaries use components as Tangut radicals—the parts under which entries are sorted—but component systems vary. Unicode's IDS (Ideographic Description Sequences) use components in compact strings that show a character's structure.

Li Yuanhao's court created Tangut writing in 1036 as the Western Xia kingdom built a distinct state identity alongside Song China. The script drew on Chinese writing and its character-building principles but was not derived from Chinese; it also emerged after neighboring Khitan scripts.

Tangut writing carried Buddhist literature, including translations of Chinese works. A woodblock-printed Tangut text sold at auction in 2014 labels components beside sample characters. Manuscripts from Khara-khoto, in present-day Inner Mongolia, date to the 12th or early 13th century.

Why does 𘣌 show as a box?

A Tangut-capable font is needed to display it. A blank box means the app has no glyph for this character; the encoded text can still be intact.

In its 2025 documentation, Tangut IME Online reports that copied Tangut text may fail to render in some mobile apps while displaying on a computer with Tangut fonts. That documentation lists Noto Serif Tangut and Tangut Yinchuan Beta, whose letterforms differ; font style can change without changing the encoded character.

Technical and archival: it suits Tangut character analysis, reference tools, or digital font and input work.

Don't read it as a Chinese word: 𘣌 is a Tangut component, not a complete character.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘣌 show as a box?

It is a font-coverage problem. The receiving app lacks a Tangut glyph or suitable fallback; the text may still be valid Unicode.
