What 𘤳 means
It is a Tangut component, not a standalone word.
Tangut component 308 helps index and describe larger characters. Its contribution depends on the whole character or its dictionary entry; component systems organize character parts, not one-word translations.
The Tangut script was developed for the Tangut language under the Western Xia state about 1036. It served official, private, and religious writing. Tangut writing continued after the state fell in 1227; the last known written example is dated 1502.
Why does Unicode include this component?
To represent pieces used in Tangut dictionaries and character analysis.
The Unicode component repertoire reflects systems used in Tangut dictionaries and scholarship. Components can also appear in Ideographic Description Sequences, compact notations that show a character's structure; there, 𘤳 contributes structure, not a word meaning.
Scholarly and technical: it labels a building block in Tangut dictionaries and character analysis.
Read it through a full character or dictionary entry; alone, it has no word translation.
Questions people ask
2Why do older sources call 𘤳 “Radical-052”?
“Radical-052” was an earlier label in a Unicode Tangut radical proposal. It names this same glyph; the component list uses “Tangut Component-308.”
Why can Tangut text show a different character in another font?
Some Tangut font encodings assigned glyphs to code points used for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text rather than to Unicode Tangut characters. Another font can interpret the same stored value differently; that is an encoding mismatch.
