Tangut Component 388

388/768

𘦃 is a Tangut component used as a dictionary radical, not a standalone word. Its role can vary across larger Tangut characters, so it has no fixed translation or sound on its own.

Text symbol

What 𘦃 means

It groups dictionary entries by a shared component.

The Tangut script was devised around 1036 CE under the first emperor of Western Xia, a kingdom in what is now northwestern China, to write the Tangut language. It remained in official, private, and religious texts after the kingdom fell and became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

Tangut characters drew visual and structural ideas from Chinese writing but formed a separate script for Tangut.

Specialist and archival: it signals Tangut text or dictionary work, not conversational writing.

Why does 𘦃 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
