What 𘊢 means
𘊢 is glossed “group” or “crowd” in a Tangut dictionary.
A Tangut–Chinese dictionary indexes it under the Chinese character 群, meaning “group” or “crowd.” It also records the reconstructed Tangut reading with the scholarly spellings xia (also xja); these mark a scholarly reconstruction, not a modern pronunciation guide.
Why was Tangut script created?
It was developed as an official script for the Western Xia state.
Under Li Yuanhao, Western Xia (Xixia) developed Tangut around 1036–1037 for state records, teaching, and translation. Translated works included the Chinese Classic of Filial Piety and Erya, an old Chinese reference book. A Tangut scholarly preface describes Tangut and Chinese as different in appearance yet sharing much in their origins; this is a broad script history, not a way to read 𘊢 as Chinese.
A document sent to a military officer in Guazhou in 1072 is cited as the earliest surviving example of Tangut writing. Later Buddhist books and other manuscripts preserved the script and help scholars reconstruct the extinct language.
What does 𘊢 mean when someone sends it?
A lone 𘊢 does not reveal why it was sent.
The dictionary’s “group” or “crowd” gloss gives a possible word meaning, not a sender’s intent. Ask for the surrounding Tangut sentence or a translation.
Historical and specialist in tone: it belongs with Tangut study, manuscript transcription, or a clearly labeled script example.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘊢 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
