What 𘦐 means
It is a structural lookup component, not a word. This Tangut component helps classify full characters by their shape so they can be found in large lists; Unicode specifies that the assignments are structural, not semantic. It does not tell you a word or sound. Putting 𘦐 beside another Tangut character also does not assemble a larger character.
The Tangut script, also called Xixia, was devised in 1036 under ruler Li Yuanhao for the Western Xia state, a Tangut-led kingdom. It supported a Tangut Buddhist canon and helped establish an identity distinct from Song China. Neighboring Khitan states had created two scripts a century earlier; Tangut writing was visually and structurally inspired by Chinese writing, but did not derive from it.
Surviving Tangut texts include Buddhist scriptures, legal documents, Confucian works, encyclopedias, military treatises, and literature. They include translations from Chinese and Tibetan as well as original works. The latest known Tangut inscription is dated 1502.
How do I type Tangut component 401?
Use a Unicode input tool or Xunpin's stroke mode. Xunpin is a Tangut input method for Rime. Its 2026 instructions say to type f to enter stroke mode, which supports component input. For direct entry, use a Unicode input tool and enter U+18990.
Why is Tangut component 401 missing?
The font may not include Tangut characters. A font without Tangut coverage may leave a blank or show a fallback box. Tangut-capable fonts can draw the same character differently; that changes its appearance, not which character the text contains.
Technical: at home in Tangut character lookup and Unicode discussions, opaque in an ordinary message.
