Tangut Component-470

What 𘧕 means

It is a structural part of Tangut characters, not a word.

Scholars use Tangut components to index whole characters in dictionaries and describe their structure, including with Ideographic Description Sequences: short formulas showing how a character is built. A component may contribute meaning or sound inside a larger character; its role belongs to that whole.

“Tangut radical 470” is not a universal label: component inventories and radical assignments differ among dictionaries. A radical is the part a particular reference uses to file characters, while “component” names a structural element more broadly.

Who created the Tangut script and why?

The script was commissioned around 1036 CE under Li Yuanhao.

The first Western Xia emperor ordered it for state-building; translating Buddhist scripture into Tangut was likely a major aim. Tangut, also called Xixia, wrote the Tangut language in square characters and originally used vertical columns ordered right to left, like traditional Chinese, while remaining a distinct script.

The neighboring Khitan states had created their own scripts roughly a century earlier, a regional precedent for state-backed script creation. Tangut texts include official, private, and religious works, books, sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts. After Western Xia fell to Mongol rule, Tangut continued under the Yuan and Ming, then became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. It was rediscovered in the late 19th century; N. A. Nevsky’s early 20th-century work helped decipher it.

How do you type Tangut component 470?

Use an HTML numeric reference or a Python Unicode escape.

In HTML, 𘧕 encodes 𘧕; in a Python Unicode string, \U000189D5 does the same. The selected font still needs Tangut Components coverage to draw it.

Technical and specialist: it belongs in Tangut reference work, character analysis, or font testing.
