Tangut Component 598

𘩕 is an indexing part in Tangut writing, not a word with a fixed standalone translation. You meet it in scholarly indexes and written breakdowns of larger Tangut characters, where its role depends on the component system. If it appears as a box, the font may lack Tangut Components coverage.

What 𘩕 means

It is one part used to analyze complete Tangut characters.

The number is a modern catalogue label, not a Tangut word. In a radical index or an Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS)—a short written recipe showing how a character's parts fit together—this component helps describe or sort a complete character.

Tangut components can contribute to a character's structure, meaning, or sound. The role of this component is read within the whole character and the component inventory being used.

Why was Tangut script created?

It was created as the writing system of Western Xia.

The Tangut script developed under the first Western Xia emperor around 1036 for state use. It appeared in official documents, Buddhist scriptures, translations of Chinese works, and other literature.

A 12th-century Tangut rhyming dictionary known as the Sea of Characters analyzed composite characters through their parts. Tangut writing drew visual inspiration from Chinese characters and from neighboring Khitan states' script-making, while developing as its own script. It remained in use after the Western Xia period and later became obsolete; component analysis is a scholarly way to describe its characters.

Why does Tangut Component-598 show as a box?

A box means your font cannot draw the character.

𘩕 is text whose visible shape depends on the font. Choose a font with Tangut Components coverage to see its glyph; a missing-glyph box does not change the character you entered.

Scholars do not use one universal component inventory, so different catalogues may divide or label Tangut forms differently. Modern stroke order is reconstructed and does not guarantee the exact hand of every historical writer.

Scholarly and technical: it belongs in Tangut catalogues and character descriptions.

Read it as part of a whole Tangut character; its catalogue number is not a Tangut word.

Why does 𘩕 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
