Tangut Component 597

597/768

Use a Tangut input tool with component or code lookup to enter 𘩔. In Tangut (Xixia) writing, it is a structural part used to describe and index full characters, not a word with its own reading. If it appears as a box, check that your font supports Tangut.

What 𘩔 means

Use a Tangut input tool with code or component lookup.

Search by component number 597 or Unicode code U18A54, then choose the candidate; some tools need their Tangut dictionary loaded first.

What does 𘩔 do in Tangut writing?

It marks a structural part used to describe or index whole Tangut characters.

The Tangut (Xixia) script was devised by imperial order in 1036 for the Western Xia state. It supported government and a distinct state identity, and carried Buddhist scriptures, translated Chinese works, religious texts, and secular writing.

Khara-Khoto, a ruined city, yielded a Tangut manuscript thought to date to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut writing developed in a region where Khitan writing was also used and drew on Chinese visual and compositional conventions, while remaining a distinct script. The mid-12th-century Sea of Characters, a Tangut dictionary, analyzed full characters by their parts. Here, 597 is an inventory label for a component; its shape alone has no fixed word translation.

Why can 𘩔 look different or show as a box?

Stroke joins can differ between chart and font drawings.

A 2020 Unicode glyph-correction proposal revised the representative drawing of Component-597 and listed five full Tangut ideographs affected by that change. The encoded character stayed the same; an older font can draw its joined strokes differently.

As of 2026, the browser-based Tangut input tool reports that some mobile apps may not display Tangut correctly. If the glyph appears as a box, try a Tangut-capable font such as Noto Serif Tangut.

A technical reference glyph for Tangut structure, indexing, and font checks.

Alone, it is a component, not a complete Tangut word.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘩔 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
