Tangut Component 740

740/768

𘫣 is Tangut component 740, a cataloged piece for analyzing larger characters; it is not a word on its own. The Western Xia (Xixia) state commissioned the Tangut script around 1036 to write the Tangut language and express state identity.

Text symbol

What 𘫣 means

Read it within the whole character. Tangut components show how larger characters are built. “740” is a modern catalog label, not a historical gloss. An Ideographic Description Sequence is a notation that lays out a character’s parts.

After the Western Xia dynasty fell, Tangut writing fell out of use. Inscriptions and manuscripts later let scholars study it again. The script had served government and Buddhist writing.

A modern catalog label for Tangut character analysis.

A box can mean your font lacks Tangut support; that does not alter the character.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘫣 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
