tangut ideograph-17010

Tangut character 17010

17/6136

The historical Tangut gloss for 𗀐 points to contempt. In an unexplained message, read it as a reference to Tangut writing before assuming an insult. If it appears as a square, the active font may lack the character.

What 𗀐 means

Dictionaries link 𗀐 to the idea of scorn. Li Fanwen's Tangut dictionary index pairs it with 蔑, a Chinese gloss for scorn or slight. Scholars reconstruct its Tangut reading; that reconstruction is historical scholarship, not a modern pronunciation guide. 蔑 has other Chinese dictionary senses too, but they do not automatically apply to this Tangut entry.

The Tangut script was created by imperial decree in 1036 for the official and cultural work of Western Xia, also known as Xixia. It was used in government records and Buddhist translations. In the 12th century, this character appears in Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”), a monolingual dictionary written in Tangut. After the dynasty fell, Tangut writing continued for centuries; the latest known example dates to 1502.

Someone sent me 𗀐 — what are they saying?

Treat it as a Tangut-script reference, not a clear insult. Its historical gloss points toward scorn, but a message without context does not reveal the sender's intention. If someone sent it alone, ask what they mean.

How do I type 𗀐?

Use Unicode input that accepts hexadecimal values. Enter U17010 in that input method; in HTML source, write 𗀐. The exact steps depend on your editor and operating system.

Unicode identifies the character; a font supplies its drawing. Tangut fonts can differ in design, and without Tangut support your app may show a square. For a readable display, choose a font with Tangut coverage.

Scholarly and historical; in a modern message it needs context to read as more than a reference to Tangut.

A scorn gloss does not prove the sender means contempt.
