Text symbol

What 𗀺 means

Its Tangut gloss is “finger.” That identifies a word in the historical Tangut language.

The Tangut script was ordered into use in 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao. A Tangut manuscript from Khara-Khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Surviving works include Buddhist scripture, Chinese works translated into Tangut, and secular books.

The script drew inspiration from Chinese writing and followed the Khitan tradition of creating scripts, while remaining distinct. Its creation served a Tangut Buddhist scripture collection and a distinct state identity.

Why does 𗀺 appear as a box?

It can. The font on your device may lack Tangut coverage, leaving a missing-glyph box where the character should be. A font with Tangut support should display it.
