Tangut Ideograph 1705D

𗁝 is a Tangut word for respect or reverence. It belongs to the historical writing system used by the Western Xia state, so a message may need context for readers unfamiliar with Tangut. If it appears as a box, the font may lack Tangut support.

Text symbol

What 𗁝 means

It means respect or reverence in Tangut.

Li Fanwen’s dictionary glosses 𗁝 as 恭敬, “respect” or “reverence.” Scholars reconstruct its pronunciation, and published reconstructions differ.

It appears in the 12th-century Tangut dictionaries Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”) and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”), which preserve vocabulary and sound notes. The Unicode label is an inventory name, not a translation of the word.

Why was the Tangut script created?

Tangut served the Western Xia state’s official and cultural life.

In the 11th century, it was created under imperial decree for government writing, Buddhist translation and printing, and other official, private, and religious texts. 𗁝 was one word in that writing system.

After Western Xia fell to Mongol forces in 1227, Tangut texts continued into the Yuan period, especially Buddhist works. That later survival is historical context, not a separate meaning for this character.

Is 𗁝 a Chinese character?

No; it is Tangut, a separate script.

Tangut characters can look square like Chinese characters, but the scripts are distinct. Resemblance does not make 𗁝 a Chinese character or give it a Chinese reading.

Historical and specialist: it belongs in Tangut-language, manuscript, or script-history contexts.

Alone, it may not communicate respect to someone who cannot read Tangut.

Questions people ask

2

Can 𗁝 stand for respect in a modern message?

Only for a reader who knows Tangut. Otherwise, add an explanation; the historical dictionary meaning alone may not give the recipient enough context.

Why does 𗁝 show as a box?

The font may lack Tangut support. A box or missing-glyph mark means the display system cannot draw this character; it does not change the character’s meaning.
