108/6136

What 𗁫 means

As of 2026, no dependable English gloss is established.

Scholarly references give two reconstructed readings in Latin notation: sə¹ and ¹sy₁. These are readings, not translations.

The Tangut script entered official use in 1036 for the Tangut language and appeared in schools, official records, and Buddhist translations. 𗁫 is attested in the 12th-century Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”), a Tangut rhyming dictionary. After the Western Xia dynasty fell, Tangut continued in religious and other texts for centuries.

Can I send 𗁫 as a message?

Use it to show Tangut writing, not to signal a mood.

A reader who knows historical Tangut may recognize its place in a text; someone without that background cannot be expected to parse it alone. If you send it by itself, explain its reading or source.

Its square, brush-built form can resemble Han characters, but Tangut is a separate script for the Tangut language. 𗁫 cannot stand in for a Han character.

Why does 𗁫 look different or show as a box?

Unicode sets the character, not one fixed drawing.

As of 2026, Noto Serif Tangut and BabelStone Tangut provide dedicated font coverage. Unicode’s reference chart allows font variation, so supported fonts can draw 𗁫 differently.

If the active font lacks Tangut coverage, correct input can still appear as a missing-glyph box. In a Unicode-aware input tool, enter hexadecimal 1706B and choose a Tangut-capable font.

Historical and specialist; without Tangut context, it reads as an unexplained specimen.

Do not use it as a Chinese-character substitute or mood reaction.
