What 𗁼 means

Use a text-entry tool that accepts Unicode code points. Enter 1707C in hexadecimal (base 16); standard keyboard layouts may not offer a Tangut key.

If the character appears as a box, blank, or replacement mark, the font or app may lack Tangut coverage. That display failure does not change the text character.

What does 𗁼 mean?

Its Unicode name is a code-point label, not a translation. 𗁼 belongs to the Tangut writing system used by the Western Xia state (Xixia), rather than to Chinese writing. A study places it in a group of Tangut characters treated as homophones—characters believed to share a sound—but scholars reconstruct the group's pronunciation differently. Those readings are proposed sounds, not an English gloss.

The Tangut script emerged around 1036 under the first emperor of Western Xia as a state-building project. It served official, private, and religious writing, including translations and Buddhist books.

Tangut writing continued in the Yuan and Ming dynasties. Scholars rediscovered it in the late 19th century and largely deciphered it in the early 20th century.

Why does Tangut look Chinese?

Tangut borrows Chinese-style forms; it remains a separate script. Its writing was visually and structurally inspired by Chinese writing, but Tangut is unrelated to Chinese ideographs. The Western Xia also followed neighboring Khitan traditions, whose people had made their own scripts earlier.

Historical Tangut was written top to bottom in columns ordered from right to left. That describes the page layout, not a property of this single character.

Historical-script and specialist: a character from Tangut writing associated with the Western Xia state.

Chinese-style strokes do not make 𗁼 a Chinese character.
