Tangut Ideograph-17084

133/6136

𗂄 is a character in the Tangut script, also called Xixia, which was used to write the Tangut language. Its Unicode name is a catalog label, not a translation; read it in a Tangut passage for its word sense. Alone, it is best treated as a sample of historical writing.

What 𗂄 means

𗂄 is a Tangut character; its Unicode name is only a label. “Tangut Ideograph-17084” identifies the entry but gives no English translation. To understand its word sense, read it in a Tangut passage; the isolated character alone is not enough to translate reliably.

The Xixia script follows a Chinese-character-like visual tradition, but it writes the Tangut language; resemblance alone does not give 𗂄 a Chinese reading. Fonts can draw the same Tangut character differently or fail to display it, without changing which character it is.

Why was the Tangut script made?

It was created to write Tangut for the Western Xia state. The script was made around 1036 under the first Western Xia emperor for official and cultural writing. Surviving materials include books, Buddhist sutras (religious texts), inscriptions, and manuscripts.

After the Mongol conquest, Tangut writing continued during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, but was obsolete by the end of the Ming. Its setting shifted from active use in state, private, and religious texts to modern scholarship and digital typography.

What does 𗂄 mean when someone sends it?

Treat an isolated 𗂄 as a reference to Tangut writing. It works best as a sample of the script, not as a self-explanatory message. If the sender means a particular word, ask for the surrounding line.

Historical and specialist: alone, 𗂄 reads most naturally as a sample of Tangut writing.

Its Unicode name identifies the entry; it does not translate its Tangut word sense.

Why does 𗂄 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
