What 𗃿 means
A Tangut rendering of 爾’s sound in a place name.
The Tangut script was promulgated in 1036 for the Tangut language. A 12th-century dictionary, Tóngyīn (“Homophones”), records 𗃿 as a place-name transliteration of Middle Chinese 爾, an earlier form of Chinese. Here, a Tangut character stands for the sound of the Chinese name.
Tangut writing drew on Chinese and Khitan scripts (used for the neighboring Khitan language), but represented Tangut.
