What 爾 means
In Classical Chinese, 爾 means “you” or “your.”
The same written form can mean “this/that,” “so,” or a sentence-ending particle. In time compounds, it behaves as a demonstrative or time-word instead of a direct address.
How did 爾 become a pronoun?
Its pronoun sense was borrowed onto an older graph.
The earliest evidence is not a one-off invention: 爾 appears in oracle-bone writing as a personal or state name, then in bronze inscriptions as a second-person pronoun. A paleographic account interprets the older shape as a frame for winding or spinning thread.
爾 and 汝 are historically connected by their second-person role, although early texts show only a rough division by grammatical position and number. The simplified form 尔 also entered modern 你.
What does someone sending 爾 mean?
A standalone Chinese 爾 reads as literary “you” or “your.”
If the sender is using Japanese, なんじ is archaic “thou”; old おれ was used toward a social inferior or as an insult, and it is not modern 俺, “I.”
A compound can switch the reading: one may mean “thereafter,” while another means “since then.” Check whether the glyph stands alone before choosing the translation.
Classical, literary, or intentionally old-fashioned; use it when that register is the point.
As casual Chinese “you,” it can sound theatrical or deliberately distant.
