Text symbol

What 𗄓 means

This Tangut character means “star.” A 12th-century Tangut dictionary records that meaning.

The Tangut script was created in 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor, Li Yuanhao, as part of state-building. Scholars connect the project to a Tangut edition of Buddhist scriptures and to an identity distinct from Song China. Tangut writing continued in Buddhist and other texts after the Western Xia state ended.

What does 𗄓𗵫 mean?

It means “constellation.” The two-character Tangut word is attested in that sense.

Tangut ritual texts about stars from Khara-Khoto and Wuwei have Chinese and Tibetan counterparts, placing this vocabulary in a wider regional tradition.

Why does 𗄓 look Chinese?

It belongs to Tangut, a separate writing system. Tangut character shapes were inspired by Chinese writing, but the script records the Tangut language. A Chinese-literate reader may recognize the style without being able to read this word as Chinese.

Older Tangut texts used vertical columns running from right to left; modern scholarship generally prints the script horizontally from left to right. The layout changed, not the character’s meaning.

Historical and scholarly in tone.

A square fallback is a missing glyph, not this character’s form.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𗄓 show as a box?

The selected font or app lacks Tangut coverage, so a box, blank, or fallback marker can replace the visible glyph. That alone does not mean the character data is wrong.

How do I pronounce 𗄓?

Tangut pronunciation is reconstructed from historical evidence, and scholarly reconstructions differ. The Mandarin reading of 星 is not a reading of this Tangut character.
