Tangut Character 1711E

287/6136

𗄞 is a Tangut character whose English gloss is unsettled in the surviving reference entry; scholars give reconstructed readings, not a reliable translation. It belongs to a script made for the Tangut state, with Chinese-style construction but a distinct language. Treat it as a historical or scholarly reference, not a self-explanatory chat reaction.

What 𗄞 means

Its English gloss is unsettled. The surviving reference entry lists several reconstructed readings—scholars’ proposals for the character’s historical sound—but does not settle a translation. It records 𗄞 in 12th-century works titled Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”) and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”). The sound reconstructions are not English definitions.

𗄞 belongs to a script commissioned in 1036 by Li Yuanhao, emperor of Western Xia, a Tangut state. The state project marked Tangut rule apart from the Song dynasty in China and supported a Buddhist canon in Tangut. Surviving Tangut books also preserve translations of Chinese and Tibetan works, law, government records, and literature. The character’s meaning depends on the Tangut word and sentence around it.

After the Mongol conquest of Western Xia in 1227, Tangut writing continued in Buddhist texts and later records; the latest known dated text is from around 1502.

What does it mean if someone sends 𗄞?

Without context, its meaning is not clear. A Tangut specialist can use a reconstructed reading or manuscript citation as a precise reference. Someone without that background needs a gloss or the surrounding text to know what the character means.

Do not infer its meaning from its shape. A documented analysis breaks it into graphic components, but Tangut components can indicate structure, meaning, or sound; the breakdown alone does not settle a translation. If it appears as a blank box, the font lacks Tangut coverage. That is a display problem, not a second form.

Historical and scholarly in tone; not a self-explanatory chat reaction.

Without context, a recipient cannot know what the character means.
