What 𗅶 means
A Tangut input method (IME) is the practical way to type it.
The receiving device needs a font with Tangut support; otherwise the character may appear as a square or fallback glyph.
In Raycosine’s browser-based Tangut IME, load dict.yaml first, then enter a code from its input scheme to see candidate characters. Without the dictionary, code entry produces no candidates.
What does 𗅶 mean?
The exact English meaning remains unsettled.
The 12th-century Tangut dictionaries Sea of Writing and Homophones preserve reconstructed readings and compounds for 𗅶. As of 2026, those records still do not settle an English translation.
Why was Tangut script created?
It served Western Xia government, Buddhist translation, and cultural identity.
Tangut writing was created around 1036 under Western Xia, a kingdom in what is now northwestern China. It supported official writing and Tangut translations of Buddhist texts, while distinguishing the state from the neighboring Song dynasty in China.
After Western Xia fell, Tangut remained in official, private, and religious writing before becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty, a later Chinese dynasty. A historical link to the neighboring Khitan scripts, another regional writing tradition, has been proposed but remains debated.
It reads as Tangut scholarship or historical display, rather than ordinary conversation.
Chinese-style construction does not make it Chinese writing.

Questions people ask
1Is 𗅶 a Chinese character?
No. 𗅶 belongs to Tangut, a separate historical script that uses some Chinese-style structural principles. That resemblance does not make it Chinese writing.
