Tangut Character 1718A

395/6136

𗆊 is a character in the Tangut script; its Unicode label identifies the glyph but does not translate it. The Western Xia (Xixia) state commissioned Tangut writing around 1036 to support its rule and produce a Tangut version of the Buddhist Canon, a collection of scriptures. If it arrives alone in a modern message, ask for its source or surrounding text before assigning it a personal meaning.

What 𗆊 means

It is a character in the Tangut writing system.

Tangut was a historical language used in the Western Xia state. In a manuscript, characters like this work inside words and sentences; the glyph by itself does not give you an English translation or pronunciation.

One surviving fragment of a Tangut manuscript probably dates from the 12th or early 13th century, showing the script in book use. Tangut texts also include Buddhist writings, legal works, Confucian texts, and literature.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It served a Tangut state and Buddhist scripture.

Western Xia commissioned Tangut writing as part of state-building; a major purpose was to produce a Tangut version of the Buddhist Canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures. A native script also marked political and cultural distance from Song China.

Tangut writing drew on Chinese visual and compositional principles, but it was a separate script, not a branch of Chinese writing. Khitan neighbors had also created scripts of their own, setting a regional precedent. Tangut remained in use during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, after Western Xia fell, before becoming obsolete.

What if someone sends 𗆊 to me?

Ask for context before assigning it a personal meaning.

An isolated send could be a reference to Tangut writing, a font test, or a design choice. Ask where it came from or request the surrounding text before deciding what the sender means.

If the message shows an empty box, the font or app cannot display this Tangut character. That is a rendering problem; the character is still 𗆊.

A historical writing-system character; in chat, it reads first as a script, study, font, or design reference.

Don't infer personal intent from the glyph alone.
