What does 𗆒 mean?
A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “slack.”
𗆒 is a written character in Tangut, the script used for the Tangut language. Tangut writing was modeled on Chinese writing, but it is a distinct script; knowing Chinese does not decode this glyph.
The Western Xia kingdom established Tangut writing by imperial decree for official and cultural use. The script was used from 1036 to 1502, including in Buddhist translations.
Historical and scholarly: use 𗆒 when discussing Tangut text, not as everyday shorthand for “slack.”
A reader who cannot read Tangut cannot get “slack” from the glyph alone.
